1. The Backstory: Why I Needed Wise
- As an “on-the-ground” observer in Cambodia, I initially explored Wise to receive payments from global ad networks two years ago. While I didn’t scale that project, I successfully linked my local ABA Bank account to Wise, and that $20 activation deposit is still sitting there today.
2. Why This Method is a “Hidden Gem” for Expats
- Most Westerners can use their home bank cards, but for expats from other regions or those wanting to integrate into Cambodia’s financial system, ABA is the most reliable “bridge.” It allows you to move USD from your local salary into the global Wise ecosystem elegantly.
3. Step-by-Step: From ABA to Wise (The $20 Test)
Step 1: Registration & KYC Verification
- Register for Wise and select “Top Up”. I registered using my ID card info, strictly filling in the address as shown on the card.
- Note: Ensure your registration address matches your ID or address proof (like utility bills) to avoid a second review after activation.
Step 2: Use ABA International Transfer
- Use the ABA Mobile App’s “International Transfer” feature. Between Swift and Instant Transfer, make sure to choose Swift.
Step 3: Enter Banking Details Exactly
- Copy the banking details provided by Wise exactly (as shown in
WISE account usd.png). Don’t forget the Reference Number!
4. Cost & Timing: Real Data Breakdown
- You can see this in my screenshot
wise handling fee.png. To ensure I had exactly $20 for activation, I transferred a total of $20.91. - Wise is very transparent; after deducting a $0.91 fee, my USD account was successfully activated within 6 minutes.
-
Reminder: While Wise charges less than $1, ABA will deduct an additional wire fee (starting at ~$10). Ensure your ABA balance is over $35 before starting.
5. The Local Benefit: Integrating with KHQR
- Once Wise is funded, you can move money back to ABA to use the KHQR system, which is accepted by almost every vendor in Cambodia.
